A New Economic Destination

Madiba Bay Leisure Park is a long-term vision for a distinctive African coastal destination where tourism, conservation, economic opportunity and community development come together. Conceived as more than a conventional leisure park, the vision brings together wildlife, marine and coastal experiences, African culture, agriculture, education, enterprise and sustainable development — creating a destination designed to benefit visitors, communities and the wider Nelson Mandela Bay economy.

Historic Willows Resort - Nelson Mandela Bay

The Madiba Bay vision began taking shape in the early 2000s from a bold idea: to use Nelson Mandela Bay’s extraordinary natural, cultural and tourism assets to create a distinctive “must-see” African destination. Historic project material shows the concept developing from an initial tourism vision into a far broader, phased development with conservation, education, job creation, skills transfer, inclusive economic participation and regional growth at its heart. The dream was never simply to build another attraction — it was to create a destination capable of leaving a lasting economic, social and environmental legacy for Nelson Mandela Bay and the Eastern Cape.

A DESTINATION ROOTED IN AFRICA

Madiba Bay is envisioned as a destination unmistakably rooted in Africa - bringing together the Eastern Cape’s coastline, wildlife, marine environment, cultures, agriculture, adventure, arts and distinctive sense of place. Rather than reproducing a generic international resort, the vision is to create an experience that allows visitors to encounter the character, diversity and opportunities of the region within one integrated destination.

LIVE, WORK, GROW & PLAY

Madiba Bay is envisioned as more than a place to visit.

The concept brings together living, employment and enterprise, learning and personal development, recreation and tourism within one integrated destination -

creating opportunities for people to participate in the life and economy of the project.

The concept seeks to support employment, skills development, entrepreneurship, inclusive economic participation and regional growth, creating pathways through which communities and businesses can participate in the destination economy
